What is Low-Earth-Orbit?

The latest development in satellite connectivity is Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO). Low-Earth-Orbit brings fiber quality broadband experience and speed anywhere in the world, including the most remote places such as the African wilderness or even the North Pole. Check out the video about low latency comparison between LEO, Fiber, MEO (Medium Orbit satellite such as O3B) and GEO (Traditional geo stationary satellite)

One of the general key satellite issues is latency. With Low-Earth-Orbit, this problem is fixed: low latency means faster loading websites, faster processed data between locations, uninterrupted cloud applications and ERP systems, and the ability to control devices and machines remotely.

Our future LEO satellite service is based on Telesat’s new Lightspeed Network. A satellite constellation with satellites that are spinning ~1,000 kms from earth which is ~35 times closer than traditional satellites. This results in low latency. With Low Earth Orbit satellite service we are able to offer fiber quality throughput and speed such as Gbps links.

Why will Castor offer LEO services based on Telesat Lightspeed satellite network while there are also other planned LEO satellite networks? There are five reasons:

  1. Telesat has acquired global spectrum rights
  2. They have the required funding to launch the satellite network, whereas most others are still requiring funding rounds
  3. They have test satellites already in orbit
  4. They provide an open architecture system, meaning it is not a plain vanilla end-to-end (consumer) service which Castor can only resell, we buy a network and build services tailored to the business customer segments we serve
  5. Castor has a long-term relationship with Telesat in providing traditional VSAT services via their satellites, it is not a start-up

Benefits of Low-Earth-Orbit

  • High Throughput
  • Low Cost
  • Low Latency
  • Global Connectivity
  • Plug & Play
  • Secure & Resilient

Low-Earth-Orbit for NGO, mining, and energy companies

With our Low-Earth-Orbit network we can provide fiber quality throughput and speed such as Gbps links. For NGOs, mining, and energy companies, the Low-Earth-Orbit satellite service will enable the use of cloud applications, the ability to access data in real-time, effective data processing between branch offices and headquarters, all the while avoiding the high latency issue of regular VSAT service, or the unreliability of terrestrial fiber networks.

Low-Earth-Orbit for financial institutions and trading companies

LEO satellite service will enable lower latency compared to international fiber based networks, resulting in faster reactions to market events and more effectively execution of arbitration strategies.

Low-Earth-Orbit for Government and Military use

For governments and military operations, a great connection might save lives. The Low-Earth-Orbit satellite service brings a whole new level of broadband performance such as enabling control and navigation of unmanned vehicles. Global, continuous, and highly secure coverage will be provided over any territory using smaller equipment and without using local ground gateways.
